Omnichain Protocols: Creating Interoperable Blockchains

09 Jun 2024

Somnia achieves metaverse interoperability with the help of omnichain protocols. This is a very important technical element to Somnia, so let’s explore what omnichain protocols actually are, and how they work in the Somnia ecosystem

What is Omnichain?

It’s very simple. Omni means “all,” so an omnichain protocol is a protocol that works across all of the blockchains. Omnichain protocols are often used for interoperability between blockchains. Somnia’s protocols are just focused specifically on the metaverse and gaming.

Although Somnia has its own L1, it also has a set of omnichain protocols that works across all of the blockchains. These omnichain protocols help to connect metaverse assets and experiences across blockchains.

Benefits of Omnichain Protocols

  • Enhanced Liquidity: By allowing assets to move freely between blockchains, omnichain protocols can increase the liquidity of digital assets.
  • Reduced Fragmentation: These protocols help reduce the fragmentation of the blockchain ecosystem by allowing different networks to work together harmoniously.
  • Increased Innovation: Developers can build decentralized applications (dApps) that leverage the strengths of multiple blockchains, increasing innovation

Somnia’s Protocols

The Somnia Protocol (SOM0) is a set of multiple protocols that are designed to bring interoperability and true ownership of digital assets to the metaverse. The Somnia Protocol (SOM0) consists of the Object Protocol, Attestation Protocol and The Marketplace Protocol. You can learn more about them on our Somnia 101 blog about the SOM0 protocol.
