A Creative Coder From Sunny Madrid: Meet Somnia’s Front End Dev Francisco

11 Sep 2024

Meet Francisco Roca, Somnia’s Front End Developer. Francisco is a creative coder who started when he was very young, and his skills have taken him all over the world. In this interview he shares some details about his background with the community, and talks a bit about how things work behind the scenes, and what he does in his free time.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background.

I was borned in Madrid, I am 38 years old. I always felt interested about how machines and software works. I started coding when I was quite young. Because of my job I traveled a lot and I lived in different countries, mainly in Europe. I just came back from Dubai where the crypto space is growing very fast. Right now in sunny Madrid, working remotely for Somnia, living with my girlfriend and my cat.

What got you interested in blockchain technology?

Blockchain technology has the potential to disrupt different industries. Along with AI, blockchain is the big new thing, a big wave you must try to catch if you are a software developer or you are in the tech world. In a couple of years we will use blockchain technology on a daily basis in multiple sectors.

What are your favorite things about the crypto space?

I love the communities that support the crypto projects. I can’t believe there are so many freaks around the world (including myself). I believe most of the people who make part of those communities have common values and want to make the world a better place with blockchain technology. Also, the technology involved is very interesting, of course. The combination of cryptography and decentralized networks is a genius idea.

What are some of your least favorite things about the space?

I think most of the people in the world are not well educated about the crypto space. You can still find frauds and scams. That doesn’t help. Also the mass media spreading fear and lies. Nothing new I guess.

Do you have a favorite video game? If not, music or movies will work.

Maybe not a favorite, but I have my gaming periods. I like Counter Strike, Assetto Corsa Competizione and of course the Somnia Playground App! I always like to watch a good movie but they barely release something good these days.

What excites you most about what you’re building at Somnia?

I think the technology we are building has a lot of potential. First of all, it’s is super fun to create worlds, invite your friends, mint assets and use your creations. A part of the fun,I believe we are creating a digital infrastructure that allows people to interact with each other in a new way. I am sure there are plenty of companies that find our technology interesting, and see ways to bring new experiences to their customers. I also believe the digitalization/tokenization of assets is going to be massive and our technology gives you the opportunity to make use of those assets.

What advice would you give to people getting started in the industry?

I think I will suggest that they find what they really like about the space. Why blockchain technology catches your attention. Focus on what you like and try to create value. It’s a very big industry that requires a lot of knowledge and a lot of different skills. You can not be everywhere and know about everything.

What has the biggest challenge been so far?

I think at the beginning it was an industry that required a lot of faith. There were a lot of doubts, so deciding that you want to develop decentralized technology with solidity was a little bit risky because you were not sure if this technology was going to be there after a couple of years.

But now it is getting fun.

What do you do for fun outside of work?

I like to travel, spend time with family and friends, eat delicious food and these days taste good wine. Read a good book, and good company is always good.
